Andy Samberg Thinks Russell Brand Will 'Kill It' At Movie Awards

'It's going to be a real stretch from the VMAs,' Samberg joked about Brand hosting the Movie Awards, airing Sunday at 9 p.m.

UNIVERSAL CITY, California — We already have a good idea of how the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, but will the rest of his show be up to snuff? This will be the two-time Video Music Awards emcee's first stint , and we're hoping he will live up to his previous performances.

During the , MTV News turned to former Movie Awards host Andy Samberg to hear his prediction on Brand's hosting prowess. Samberg said that it probably wouldn't be too different from Brand's other times hosting MTV awards shows.

"It's going to be a real stretch from the VMAs," he joked.

"What's he going to do? I just wonder if in the beginning he's going to have some short film about how he's got to make it to the Movie Awards in time. Is he going to make it? He's in this film, how's he going to make it? Every host seems to have this problem," Samberg continued sarcastically.

It's true, we've seen a host or 10 do that familiar sketch in the past, though Samberg managed to avoid falling into that trap with his hilarious spoof on "Slumdog Millionaire," "The Reader," "Twilight" and "Star Trek" during his hosting gig. We're sure Brand also has something different up his sleeve this year, and Samberg seemed to genuinely be looking forward to seeing what madness the Brit will concoct.

"So many ingredients in a Movie Awards stew. I mean, celebs, spoofs, great performances," he said. But the key ingredient? "A great host. That's going to kill it, man. Russell's hilarious."

Samberg took some time to reminisce on his own year hosting the Movie Awards, which apparently earned him $5 (well, in addition to whatever his salary was). Since he hosted back in 2009 — the first year "Twilight" was a nominee — Samberg said he was a little overwhelmed by the fan hysteria.

"My year was like the first year of 'Twilight,' so you couldn't hear anything. It was just a din of screaming girls," he said. "At one point, I walked out and I had a bet with somebody backstage and I just went, 'Twilight,' and everyone went, 'Wahh!' and I was like, I just made five bucks."

Green Lantern: Get To Know DC Comics' New Gay Icon

'Earth 2' writer James Robinson tells MTV that Alan Scott, returning to DC Universe as a gay man, is 'proud of who he is on every level.'
By Josh Wigler

The original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, is back in the DC Universe for the first time since last year's companywide reboot. He's courageous, charismatic and powerful, the same hero fans have loved and adored for decades, with just a few notable modifications — the most controversial of which involves his sexuality.

DC Comics announced Friday (June 1) that Scott has been reimagined as a gay man, marking a significant change to the hero who has been around since the 1940s. His sexuality will be revealed in the pages of writer James Robinson's "Earth 2" #2, and ahead of that, the scribe has been making the rounds, speaking with outlets all about the new Green Lantern.

For those of you just tuning in, here are five things you need to know about DC's newest gay icon:

Like Son, Like Father
Robinson revealed to MTV Geek that Scott's new sexuality was partly inspired by the character's gay son, Obsidian, who no longer exists in the rebooted DCU.

"The only thing that bothered me about rebooting the character and making him younger again was that we lost his son Obsidian, who was gay — the original version, obviously, when he was an older man, with a son," Robinson said about creating the new Green Lantern. "And then, with that in mind, I thought, 'Well, why not make Alan Scott gay. Why not make the leader of the Justice Society gay?' It worked on every level. I suggested it to [DC Comics co-publisher] Dan DiDio, and to be fair to Dan, there wasn't a moment's hesitation. He said, 'Yeah, great, great idea.' "

Original Green Lantern Is Gay, DC Announces

Fighting for Acceptance
Scott is certainly one of the more prominent gay characters in the DC Comics catalog, and even though many fans are accepting him with open arms, he'll have his fair share of social hurtles to overcome.

"One of the unfortunate things about the United States is that some states are less willing to [let] people have their personal freedoms," Robinson told Geek. "So, in 'Earth 2,' some of those things are obstacles a gay person might face. But Alan Scott is a force of nature, so he would never let that stand in his way. He's proud of who he is on every level."

Alan Scott, Media Mogul
Speaking of every level, there are many layers to the new Alan Scott beyond his sexuality. One of the most important elements to the rejiggered character is that he's in charge of a major media empire, for instance.

"He's a giant of the media industry," the writer said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "By getting involved in communication, the news, and the Internet, he's become a billionaire. He's kind of a cross between Mark Zuckerberg and David Geffen. The original Alan Scott owned a radio station in the '40s and '50s, so he was a media giant then. He was this bold, heroic, brave man who took control, who would risk his life for you and be this emerald knight that was always there to protect the world."

James Robinson Speaks With MTV Geek About Green Lantern's Sexuality

An A-List Superhero
Scott isn't just a media mogul or a solo-operating superhero, either: The Green Lantern of "Earth 2" is a leader of men — specifically, the Justice Society.

"He will be very much the leader of the Justice Society and a figurehead," Robinson said in an interview with the Huffington Post. "Often, I think, gay characters, with the exception of Batwoman, are part of a team but are often aside, somewhat. Alan's going to be at the forefront of this team, leading it, being someone that is loved and admired by the people of Earth 2. So that's a subtle difference that I will be adding: trying to not just present a positive gay role model but someone that is a type-A superhero."

He's Not Alone
One of Robinson's major goals for "Earth 2" is to present a cast that's as diverse as humanly possible. To that end, the writer promised that Scott isn't the only homosexual character in the comic.

"There is another character down the line, but that character won't be appearing for some time, so it's probably a bit too early to talk about that," he told the Advocate. "But this book will definitely have a diverse cast. Alan Scott won't be the only gay character in 'Earth 2' — I promise you that."

Aerosmith Rockers To Present MTV Generation Award To Johnny Depp!

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry make a special MTV Movie Awards visit Sunday to celebrate their superstar friend.
By Kara Warner

As if we hadn't already stacked Sunday's MTV Movie Awards with the coolest of all cool factors in naming Johnny Depp our Generation Award recipient, two equally esteemed legends will be on hand to bestow the prestigious honor upon Depp: rock gods Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith.

If the presenter pairing seems at all out of place, rest assured that the rockers have been chummy with Depp for some time and recently held an impromptu and well-documented jam session at the afterparty for Depp's latest movie "Dark Shadows."

And if that trio isn't enough to have you psyched, current "it" rockers the Black Keys will join the celebration and perform a special rendition of their hit "Gold on the Ceiling" in Depp's honor.

The MTV Generation Award is the Movie Awards' highest honor, acknowledging an actor who can be counted on to engage the MTV audience with everything he or she does. Previous recipients include Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey.

Tyler and Perry are the latest big names to be added to an already crazily star-studded show that will feature appearances by Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale, Jodie Foster, Charlie Sheen, Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield, Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg.

"The Hunger Games" and "Bridesmaids" lead the field with eight nominations apiece, with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" and " 21 Jump Street" right behind with six nods each.

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live this Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.

Big Sean Plans To Take His Career 'Past' Jay-Z, Kanye

'If I don't take it past where they took it, then what the hell am I doin'?' MC tells MTV News of his quest for rap's #1 spot.
By Rob Markman

Big Sean
Photo: MTV News

Now that Big Sean is finally famous, the Detroit MC has his eyes set on hip-hop immortality. Kanye West once told the 24-year old spitter he was going to be the best rapper of all-time — he couldn't get a bigger endorsement.

"He actually told me that I was going to be the best. But I took that as the potential, because he speaks with so much passion," Big Sean told MTV News in New York last week. "What he meant was, I'm his protégé, he took me under his wing. I'm in the studio hanging with him and Jay-Z, I'm in the studio with Nas, I'm in the studio with everybody, and it's like, if I don't take it past where they took it, then what the hell am I doin'?"

Last year, B.I.G. dropped his debut album, Finally Famous, released a few high-powered singles and landed on MTV News' Hottest MCs in the Game list. Recently, Sean has been cutting his teeth alongside some pretty capable MCs. On G.O.O.D. Music's "Mercy" single, he spits alongside Pusha T, Kanye and 2 Chainz, on "Slight Work," he goes toe-to-toe with Wale, and on Meek Mill's "Burn," Sean volleyed bars back and forth with the MMG standout.

On Friday (June 1), Lil Wayne released "My Homies Still," the first single from his upcoming I Am Not a Human Being II album, and it features none other than Big Sean Don. When rhyming in tandem with Tune, the G.O.O.D. Music MC juggles rapid-fire bars and also inspires Weezy to repeatedly chant "Go stupid, go stupid," just as Sean did on his hit single "Dance (A$$)."

Whether the "My Last" lyricist will fulfill Yeezy's big-time rap prophecy remains to be seen, but he has been keeping some great company. Mix that with his own natural ability, and the future looks bright for Big Sean. He likens his rhyme innovation to the late Steve Jobs.

"It's like natural progression, it's like evolution," he said. "If Steve Jobs would've made the same cell phone, the big-ass, dumbass phone that we be all talkin' on instead of the iPhone, then it wasn't no point for him to be who he was."

It sounds like a tall order, but during Big Daddy Kane's early 1990s reign, no one predicted that then-rookies Jay-Z and the Notorious B.I.G. would be mentioned among rap's greats either. At this juncture in his career, Big Sean's hunger remains his biggest asset. "I'm 24 years old, and I'm just finding myself as an artist now," he explained. "I be foolin' on the track. You hear me coming up with my own ad libs, my own lingo, my own words, but it's not just because I'm funny and I'm a fool; it's because I'm tryna push the envelope of hip-hop.

"I'm tryna create something new," he continued. "That's when the greatest things always happen: when you try to create something new."

Original Green Lantern Is Gay, DC Announces

Alan Scott, who first appeared in the 1940s, is being reintroduced by DC Comics as a homosexual man.
By Josh Wigler

When DC Comics relaunched its entire line of superheroes in 2011, big changes were made to their biggest characters: Superman was no longer married to Lois Lane, a secret criminal organization was running Gotham City completely under Batman's radar, and Aquaman finally got some respect. But perhaps the biggest of all the alterations to a DC hero's origin was just announced Friday (June 1): Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, is gay.

First appearing in a 1940 issue of "All-American Comics," Scott was originally introduced as a mystically driven hero who shared little in common with the intergalactic peace-keeping Green Lantern Corps, aside from his superhero name of choice. Now, he'll be reintroduced in the pages of "Earth 2" — which takes place in a parallel world from the rest of the DC Universe — not only as a member of the Corps, but as a gay man as well.

"He's going to be the leader of the team, this dynamic hero, he'll do anything to save people, the bravest man on the planet. Why not just make him gay as well?" explained "Earth 2" writer James Robinson in an interview with USA Today. "What I really want to do with this character is make the fact that he's gay to be a part of who he is and not to be the one identifying aspect of him ... and have his humor and his bravery be as much or more a part of him as his sexuality."

Robinson added that Scott will one day meet Hal Jordan, the hero played by Ryan Reynolds in 2011's "Green Lantern" movie, and they'll have very different personalities and power sets. "When they're firing their rings at the same time, you'll be able to tell which energy is which," said the writer. "That's a very important thing so that it sets them apart."

DC's announcement of Alan Scott's new sexuality follows last month's news that rival publisher Marvel would be featuring a gay wedding in the pages of "Astonishing X-Men." The character at the heart of that story — Northstar, a former member of the Canadian superhero team Alpha Flight — isn't exactly a household name. Scott isn't the most widely known character either, but as a Green Lantern, he's about to become one of the most iconic gay heroes in mainstream comics.

"He's someone you would want to watch over your children," Robinson said of Scott. "Presenting that kind of a heroic role model hopefully will be a good thing and help to show gays in a positive light for people who might be a little more small-minded."

Scott's full story will be told in "Earth 2" #2, on sale Wednesday.

Celebrity Breakups: Heidi Klum & Seal Divorce

Heidi Klum and Seal

They've shared one of the most passionate unions in Tinseltown, so it comes as sad and surprising news that Heidi Klum is getting divorced from husband Seal. Seal was the special guest during Monday's (January 23) taping of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show". With the episode set to air later this week, the 48-year-old British singer opened up about ending his marriage with wife of six and a half years, Heidi Klum, telling, “I think we were shocked. You go into these things with the greatest intentions when you say ‘I do’ and you say ’til death do us part.’ Those vows hold value. They are not just words… You try and you work through it and the thing that you quickly realize when you are married and you become a parent you do the best that you can." "It makes you actually appreciate your parents a lot more. The thing that I’m most proud about this great woman who married (and I really do mean that from the bottom of my heart), is that together she has given me four incredible gifts…four beautiful children [Leni, Henry, Johan, and Lou]. She still, in my opinion, the most wonderful woman in the world. I think our priority was to remain civil and do this thing with dignity. We still very much love each other,” Seal, who also performed “Let’s Stay Together” for the daytime talk show, added. “To say that neither of us were grieving would be an out and out lie (and I don’t mind telling you that). I think the operative here is that we are civil to each other and we both have a tremendous amount of respect and love and we try and do this with as much dignity as we possibly can.” Meanwhile, the "Kiss From a Rose" singer also commented on the fact that he was still sporting his wedding band, as he explained, “Yes, I am still wearing my ring. I think it’s just pretty much a token of how I feel about this woman. We have eight years. Eight wonderful years together. Just because we have decided to separate doesn’t necessarily mean you take off your ring and you’re no longer connected to that person. We will be connected in many ways ‘til the rest of our lives…. though our children and also through this tremendous admiration, respect and love that we have for each other. Will we wear the ring for the rest of our lives? Who knows? But right now it feels really comfortable on my hand so I have intentions of taking it off anytime soon.” [gallery=811]Heidi Klum and Seal

The right song can make a normal scene in a movie one that goes down as a classic, and pairing a scene with the perfect backing tune can shed new light on a song you thought you knew. So for the MTV Movie Awards, we honor the music that met the perfect movie and made the magic happen.

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to cast your vote and make sure your favorite takes the stage this Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET to collect the Golden Popcorn.

Here's our rundown of the Best Music nominees:

College and Electric Youth's "A Real Hero," "Drive"
If "Drive" had been just a straightforward crime thriller like a synopsis might suggest, it would have amounted to nothing more than an average genre entry with a pretty face attached. Instead, director Nicolas Winding Refn infused every inch of this new cult classic with '80s nostalgia, including an electro-fueled soundtrack, led by the College/ Electric Youth collaboration "A Real Hero." The pick could seem odd at first, but as soon as it kicks in and all other sound fades away, everything just clicks.

Figurine's "Impossible," "Like Crazy"
Young lovers inevitably come to adopt songs as meaningful and important to the memory of their relationship. Appropriately, last year's "Like Crazy" featured a killer soundtrack, suitable for the impossibly cute first love. "Impossible" comes up during one of the more difficult moments in the film, when our ocean-crossed lovers are apart and old memories keep new ones from taking. It added a layer of reality and depth to a scene that felt straight out of real life.

Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness" (Steve Aoki dance remix), "Project X"
When it comes to throwing the world's greatest house party, a badass playlist lands at the top of the to-do list, right below "invite people." Just a quick glimpse at the clip proves that there's nothing quite like this Kid Cudi/ Steve Aoki jam to party till the sun comes up or the cops kick everyone out.

LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem," "21 Jump Street"
Now if you're more in the mood for party music to get stabbed in the back to, LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" may be more up your alley. The song turned out to be the perfect accent to Schmidt and Jenko's first big house party as fake high-schoolers, and it showed that you shouldn't let something like a pesky knife wound ruin your rager.

The Chemical Brothers' "The Devil Is in the Details," "Hanna"
Similar to "Drive," "Hanna" uses fairy-tale motifs and a frighteningly memorable score from the Chemical Brothers to elevate what would have otherwise been a rather typical Bourne rip-off. The music adds a whole other level of danger and makes the tale of a tween-age master assassin all the more sinister and disturbing.

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live this Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.

Lady Gaga Wants A Fake Rolex, Thailand Wants An Apology

As Gaga brings her Born This Way Ball to Bangkok, Thailand's government is enraged over her plans to buy fake goods.

Lady Gaga apparently wants to go shopping in preparation for her next concert in Bangkok — for a fake Rolex.

At least that's what she told her 24 million Twitter followers upon her arrival in Bangkok on Wednesday (May 30). "I just landed in Bangkok baby! Ready for 50,000 screaming Thai monsters. I wanna get lost in a lady market and buy fake Rolex."

The tweet sparked instantaneous uproar on various social media and web forums, as many local residents felt the comment was insulting, abrasive and generally damaging to the reputation of Thailand. Gaga has yet to apologize for the tweet.

The Commerce Ministry of Thailand is in a long-standing battle with piracy, and members of the government feel that this message directly undermines their efforts. An official at the ministry's Intellectual Property Department recently told Reuters that: "Lady Gaga is a representative of the U.S. and the U.S. puts pressure on smaller countries to promote the protection of intellectual property," adding that "she should tell her fans that they shouldn't use fake goods."

The controversial message has also been addressed by members of Thailand's music industry. Thai DJ Suharit Siamwalla responded by tweeting: "We are more civilized than you think," then added that he now plans to boycott Gaga's show on Friday.

It seems that Mother Monster just can't seem to stay out of trouble as her Born This Way Ball makes its way across Asia. The Thailand controversy comes almost immediately after she had to cancel a show in Indonesia, and then responded to various Islamic threats surrounding that show.

Not all fans have taken umbrage with Gaga's latest comments. Throngs of fans awaited her arrival to the hotel, and people are already camped outside Rajamangala stadium in hopes of being one of the lucky "monsters" who get to meet the pop star.
